10 Years of Blogging

It sounds way cooler than it actually is. It also sounds way longer than it feels. 10 years, how that happened?? I guess switching blogs and personas makes it seem like I’m a newbie, but I’m actually not. I’ve opened my first proper blog on a summery August day, back in 2008, during summer break.

The summer of 2008

My beloved Peppi’s Story.

How it all started? I was bored and a friend just introduced me to the world of blogging. I think it was the time I actually got my first computer and obviously took advantage of it.

It was kind of a public diary about my life, accompanied by a collage of clothes that I would wear that day. Those were the years I stuck to Slovene as well… I think half of the school was reading it just so they could stay up to date. I had a strong concept going on for a while and it was completely unfiltered, 100% honest, almost in real time. I had a teenager “dear-diary” type of moment going on.

fun fact: I was one of the first to publish about a slovenian model Jurij Bradač being featured in Lady Gaga music video. Imagine the views!

Then, the fashion blogging exploded. Suddenly, it was all about the outfit photos.

My Google Reader filled up, my new role models became fashion blogger girls and I wanted to be one of them. It all transformed to long paragraphs of deep thoughts in english, totally unrelated outfit mirror shots, occasional editorial photos from some magazine, hauls, wish lists…

New blogging format, enters Fashion Junki(e)

Hence, in 2010, Fashion Junkie was born (I had my first domain registered with the “e” missing, because the name was already taken by someone else…). Those were the most productive years!

My English improved with every post, my style evolved and my personality with it. By exploring the fashion and the world of blogs, I’ve expanded my comfort zone and developed character at the same time. (most of those posts are still available in the archive here)

Blogging has been a part of me for such a long time, that’s actually become my second nature. It defined my personality, habits, point of view in a major way. I remember coming home, always thinking about what I will write about next, when will it be published, how will it go in the whole concept of the blog.

The only “problem” was, I wanted to do it all by my own. I got frustrated with myself so many times, because I couldn’t reach the already rapidly rising standards for fashion bloggers. I wanted to be one of them so badly, but at the same time, I was so not comfortable following that format. And it showed! My point of blogging was never a full time career, even though I saw it starting to happen for others. I just wanted an outlet for my creativity, but I wished to have a blog that would still be recognized as a good one.

Back to the roots

After 5 years, I finally admitted to myself, that fashion blogging is not for me. Once my haven became a burden, I really contemplated quitting alltogether. But, obviously, I didn’t, hence you’re now here, reading this on pelamarela.com.

I decided to scale down, give space to my thoughts. Even the darker ones, like anxiety. Now, blogging is my happy place again. I can let my thoughts and creativity loose and strengthen my skills at the same time.

Blogging was my first closer encounter with the world wide web and the reason I’ve fallen in love with it. It led me to the career I have now. Sadly, this is the reason I’ve been neglecting the blog in the past year. When your job includes spending your day creating and managing web content for others, it gets harder to do it in the free time as well.

And it’s why I’m so much more thankful for all of you that still stop by. Even though being a “blogger” can almost mean an insult nowadays, I’m proud to still be called that sometimes. ♥
